Branding

This project challenged students in our Capstone course to develop a brand identity through a series of twelve original design pieces. These are a selection of my strongest designs from that project. I created a brand centered around a film photography business focused on capturing candid moments on photographic film. I chose a modern, analog-inspired visual style that emphasizes simple colors, clean layouts, and a distinctive identity. The logo is designed to resemble a strip of 35mm film, with a 35mm film canister on the left and a 120 film spool on the right.

Instructional Design

This project challenged students to design visual instructions using minimal text and primarily visual elements, similar to an IKEA instruction manual. Since I was heavily involved in film photography at the time, I chose to create instructions for developing a roll of black and white 35mm film. Black and white and color film use different development processes, with color film requiring different chemicals and much stricter temperature control, making black and white film a more approachable subject for this project. To create the illustrations, I used Adobe Illustrator’s Image Trace tool on product photos before refining them into simple, consistent graphics. I then organized each illustration into a clear, step-by-step guide based on my own experience developing black and white film.

Trifold

Software: Adobe InDesign

This project challenged me to design a trifold brochure as an advertisement. I chose to create promotional material for myself as a photographer, allowing me to practice designing for a real-world service. My goal was to create a clean, modern layout while using a warm, timeless color palette that felt both inviting and professional.

Book Design Project

Software: Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator
Year: 2025

This project challenged me to design the layout of a book, including the cover, chapter pages, and interior typography, rather than writing the story itself. Since I wasn’t sure what direction to take with the narrative, I collaborated with my brother, who developed the story while I designed the book’s layout, cover, and overall visual identity. Due to the project’s time constraints, we expanded portions of the manuscript with AI generated text to meet the required chapter and page count. For the cover, I wanted to capture a sense of adventure, mystery, and ancient lore inspired by works like The Lord of the Rings, and I carried that visual style throughout the book.

Postcard

Software: Photoshop
Year: 2024

This project challenged me to gather and composite several visual assets into a postcard advertising a unique destination. I chose the Moon as my location because, well, it’s the Moon; I’d definitely visit. I created the composition using a combination of Adobe Firefly-generated images of the Moon’s surface and astronauts, along with images of Earth, the Epcot ball, a pyramid, and a family. I focused on combining these elements into a cohesive scene that felt believable while maintaining the concept’s imaginative nature. Finally, I exported the composite and imported it into a new project file, where I gave it the appearance of an old, weathered postcard.

Original Course Version

Interactive App Prototype

Year: 2025

This project was one of my most challenging design projects to date. For the final project in my Interactive Design course, I was tasked with creating an interactive app prototype using Figma. I developed a concept called “Photographer’s Hub,” a resource for photographers of any experience level to find inspiration, advice on equipment and editing, and communities where they could share their work and receive feedback. I wanted the app to be highly organized and detailed, though I may have gone a little overboard with the original design.

Rather than leaving the project as a completed class assignment, I have continued revisiting and refining the prototype independently. The version presented here reflects those ongoing changes as I work toward better aligning the design and user experience with my original vision.

120 Film Canister

Year: 2026

While taking my B&W Film Photography II course, I became concerned that my 120 film could unravel after shooting, potentially exposing and ruining the film before I could develop it. To solve this problem, I designed a small, 3D-printable canister to protect exposed film spools from light. I designed the canister to screw together with overlapping lips around the opening, minimizing the chance of light reaching the film. I also designed the connection to sit around the center of the spool, so that even if a small amount of light reached the inside of the canister, it would primarily hit the paper backing rather than the film itself. After printing and testing the design, I began using the canisters as part of my regular 120 film workflow.

While exploring various film cameras, I stumbled upon the stereo camera and decided I had to get my hands on one. I found a Kodak Stereo camera and purchased a Kodak Stereo Viewer II to go with it. After shooting and developing my first, and so far only, roll from the camera, I needed a way to place the stereo negatives into the viewer. Through further research, I discovered that Kodak originally produced stereo film slides specifically designed for this purpose. However, I had difficulty finding empty slides, and I didn’t want to continually purchase them from individual sellers online. Instead, I decided to design my own reusable slides.

I based my design on reference images, estimated dimensions of the original slides and photographs, and measurements of the slot in the viewer. The design proved challenging and required several attempts, particularly when determining the correct size of the viewing windows and the slots that hold the negatives in place. I eventually produced a functional design that allows me to insert my negatives into the slides and view them through the stereo viewer. I still want to refine the design further, potentially separating the front and back into two pieces that can snap together around the negatives, making the loading process easier and more efficient.

Eagle Scout Project Sign Design

Year: 2022-24

Fun fact: I was a Boy Scout growing up and eventually achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. As part of the requirements, I planned, prepared, executed, and documented a service project that would benefit my community. I reached out to several local organizations and eventually partnered with Circle B Bar Reserve to design and install four boot brush stations at different trailheads throughout the reserve.

I designed both the stations and their instructional signs, working closely with the reserve’s staff to develop a design that met their needs. The sign went through 13 different iterations before the final design was approved. I also helped gather materials, construct the stations, and install the finished signs and stations on site. From our initial conversations to the completed installation, the project took approximately two years, including about six months of gathering materials and two weeks of construction and installation. The four completed stations were ultimately installed at different trailheads throughout the reserve.
